Which Wood Fence Is Right For Your Yard?

Many homeowners pick a wood fence due to its timeless appearance. However, the different styles of wood fencing can seem quite overwhelming. That's why it will help to know your options so that you can pick the right one for your home.

Privacy Fence

Privacy fences are a great choice for homeowners that want a bit of security and seclusion in their backyard. They use pickets that are spaced together closely, which blocks anyone from viewing your yard from the outside. Privacy fences are also good at reducing noise from street traffic due to being a solid barrier. However, the solid nature of the fence can block natural light, which may not be good for plants that line the fence.

Picket Fence

A picket fence has an iconic and traditional look, with pickets that are evenly spaced out with gaps between them. They work great for a front yard where you do not want a very tall fence, and can even add curb appeal to your home. However, it doesn't offer much privacy or security. It's more for decorative purposes to improve the look of your home.

Lattice Fence

A lattice fence will combine style and function by having panels of wood that cross over each other in a pattern. Many people like a lattice fence because it is semi-private, but plants can be used to fill in the gaps and provide more privacy. There is also a unique visual interest to the fence, and it allows light and airflow to pass through.

Shadow Box Fence

What makes a shadow box fence unique is that there are overlapping boards on each side of the fence, which makes both sides look identical to each other. It's great if you are sharing a fence with a neighbor and don't want either person to look at the bad side of the fence. A shadow box fence offers semi-privacy, with people being able to see inside if they are looking at the right angle. One thing to be aware of is that a shadow box fence has overlapping material, so it will use more material than a normal privacy fence.

Split Rail Fence

A split rail fence is best used to mark the property line of a very large plot of land. It uses rails that span horizontally and does not offer privacy or security. However, the fence does have a rustic charm to it that may work well for your home, and help you save money if you just want your property line established.
